Erdiston Nursery School was the first public nursery school to be established in Barbados. It was opened in 1965. For number of years, classes were conducted during the morning session only. In 1980, a two-shift system was introduced so that more children in the 3-4 age group could benefit from nursery education.
Under this system some pupils attended school in the morning, 8:45-12:00 noon and some pupils attended in the afternoon, 12:30-3:00 p.m. In the year 2000, the whole day system was introduced using only one group. Since then, the numbers of whole day groups have continued to increase. Pupils were placed in groups of fifteen (15) students to one teacher. However, from September, 2006 school was fully conducted on a whole day basis.
