Welches Primary School is a small institution located in the rural district of Redman's Village in St. Thomas.
There is no written account of the exact date of the erection of the school; however, interviews with older people in the area suggest that the school dates back to the 1920's. At first, it was called the Welches Combined School. During this period, the Headmaster and his family resided on the compound. Although minor extensions have been made to the physical structure of the building during more recent times, segments which were occupied by the Headmaster and his family can be still identified.
During the period after the Second World War, evidence suggests that the name of the school was changed to Welched Mixed School. It was at this time that the whole character of the school changed in that the Headmaster no longer resided on the premises. The sections which he and his family occupied were converted into classrooms. The physical plant was also expanded.
In its formative years, the school catered to pupils aged five (5) to sixteen (16). The major focus in education was the teaching of the three R's and Religious Education. However, some emphasis was also placed on the teaching of Woodwork, Metalwork and Agriculture. One individual boasted that the school always captured the first prize in the School Garden Competition and the Music Competition. A lot of this success could be attributed to the late Mr. L.T Gay, who was one of the first Headmasters of the school. Among other names mentioned as Headmasters were Mr. Dean Armstrong and Mr. D. Lowe.
During the 1980's, the school was renamed Welches Primary School. The school now caters to the children from three (3) years of age to eleven (11) years. It continues to build on its rich heritage.
